New Mexico Staycation: Los Poblanos

Los Poblanos Historic Inn and Farm, est. 1934

We spent my birthday weekend at Los Poblanos, an organic lavender farm and historical inn located along the Rio Grande River Valley in Albuquerque.  With the luxurious Hacienda spa, farm-to-table Campo restaurant, wellness yurt, saltwater pool, peaceful gardens, and activities for the whole family, Los Poblanos is a gem and a well-kept secret just a short drive from home.  It's so lush in this part of Albuquerque next to the Rio Grande that it's hard to believe we were only an hour away from Santa Fe.  There are three different types of rooms at the resort, and we stayed in the North Field with a private patio overlooking the lavender fields and Sandia mountains.

I recently heard the term agritourism to describe a farm-oriented getaway, which has become a recent vacation trend.  While we didn't actively participate in the farming at Los Poblanos there's something about being present with the process and being surrounded by fields that brings a sense of connection to the Earth.  With all the chaos and unknowns in the world, there is still the foundation of plants growing, flowers blooming in season, animals going about their day to day routines, and the seasons passing.  This was a beautiful time on the farm with the sunflowers in bloom and the scent of lavender in the air.

While COVID isn't going away, I feel a sense of reassurance now that my whole family is vaccinated and that the newer variants tend to be less severe, especially for kids.  Our family is making up for lost time and exploring the world through both vacations and stay-cations.  We felt very safe at Los Poblanos.  Except for time spent in our room, most of the trip was spent outdoors.  We never encountered large crowds, we enjoyed outdoor dining on the patio for dinner and brunch, and there was lavender hand sanitizer available throughout the resort.

We were only there 24 hours but Los Poblanos is the kind of place you could stay for a day or a week and emerge feeling refreshed.  One night was the perfect amount of time for good food, relaxation, a spa visit, walking through the gardens, perusing the farm shop, and taking a dip in the saltwater pool.   We even spotted a few early morning hot air balloons traveling over the bosque overlooking the Sandia mountains.  Next time we'd love to rent bikes to tour the grounds.  And I hope there will be a next time!
